My Pastors Wife

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be the Pastors wife? Are you a Pastors wife?  Are you in the early years of ministry, middle years, or later years?

I understand what it is like to be the wife of someone in the ministry. My husband has fulfilled the calling as a children’s minister, youth minister, and associate pastor. He is currently the Minister of Education, and has been for the past seven and half years. Altogether, we have served in the ministry full time for a little over eleven years.

From my limited years of experience, compared to others, I want to offer those of you supporting, serving, and fulfilling your call alongside your husband in ministry some encouragement.

First of all, GOD sees you. And for those incredible women in my own church (Nancy, Lea, Alysce, and Hannah) this is for you. I see and notice you. Not everyone sees what you do, because they have never walked in your shoes. I see the many hours you spend supporting your husband and trying your best to serve and help him in his ministry.  I see the many events you end up hosting, sometimes in your house, and the way you help plan, lead, help set up, and administrate behind the scenes (or in the late hours of the night after all else has settled).  I see you taking initiative to love, welcome, and offer encouragement to those around you.

I see the younger ones trying to balance serving their husband, while working hard as they finish their education strong. I see the late nights you spend trying to balance it all. I see some of you working so hard in an outside job because let’s be honest, ministry is not about the money. You give all day, you give at home, you give to your husband, you give to your kids, you give to your church. God sees that too.

I see and know that you do all of this because you are equally called by God to fulfill this role.  I also know very well that you don’t need recognition or appreciation, but I love you and want to do it anyway.

I see your kind gentle spirit. My pastor’s wife, Nancy, is such a testimony to this. There is a prayer by Mother Teresa that I think sums her spirit up.

“Let me preach You without preaching, not by words, but by my example, by the catching force, the sympathetic influence of what I do, the evident fullness of the Love my heart bears to you. Amen” ~ Mother Teresa

I would be willing to guess that many of you could say the same about your pastor’s wife.

I also see you sitting alone, or corralling kids by yourself. I see you sometimes overwhelmed and a tear slip discreetly from your cheek. I see the loneliness that can sometimes come with leadership and I so badly want to pull you in. I see your heart and I see you pulled in many directions. I also see the hurt when your husband is hurt or criticized. You are human and you take it personal. If only our skin were created thicker.

But really, what I see in you, more than all of that I see joy. I see your joy in watching lives transformed. I see your joy when you have the honor and privilege to pray for the people in your ministry. I see the joy when you have given your all and know that God did big things in hearts and lives.

I hope and pray my sweet sisters, my fellow pastors wives, that you will know how loved you are and that you are not alone. Thank you for accepting this call from God. Thank you for serving and praying for your husband and church. Thank for sharing him and being on call all the time. You encourage me and bless me and I love you.

Bitter, Better, or Butter?

A few days ago my oldest daughter came home from school upset. She had experienced a little dose of life being unfair, and her heart was frustrated, upset, and a little angry.

To be honest, my Momma Bear heart started to get angry too, and I wanted to turn my car around and make sure this situation never happened again. (It really was not even that big of a deal, but you know how a Mom’s emotional heart can sometimes react).  I took a few moments to gather my emotions, silently listened to God and prayed for an appropriate response, and he began to awaken my heart.

Life is just not fair. It throws bad things on good people. It doesn’t care who you are, at some point life can hit you like a brick with a dose of unfair reality.  It doesn’t matter if you are nine or ninety, we all experience times when we fill mistreated, forgotten, overlooked, or burned. But, thank heavens that my precious nine-year-old has the opportunity to learn and practice today how God desires for her to respond to life’s hurts. As a mom, who has had to practice life being unfair too, I had the divine appointment to teach her how to respond today and in the future when some of life’s more hurtful events might hit her.

I first asked her to tell me how often this situation has happened. Was this the first time? Much like her Mother we can magnify a molehill into a mountain, so gaining perspective is key to understanding how to move forward.

Second, I asked her to take a look at her offender. Could this person possibly have been frustrated, tired, or hurting? What if they had a really bad day and sadly took it out on the wrong person. Have we ever done that? Can we forgive them and offer grace? Can we do something to show them love and encouragement, because maybe that’s the real issue. Maybe THEY need something. Try to look at this person through the lens of love, grace, and forgiveness.

Lastly, I told her every time life is unfair we have two options. We can get bitter or better. We can stay mad, choose not to forgive, look at them with dislike, and in the end poison ourselves with resentment. Hurting ourselves, our relationship with God, and others.

OR, we can choose to get better. We can ask God to teach us through this awful, terrible, unfair moment, so this experience does not go to waste. We can learn, grow, take notes, and get better by the grace, love, and strength our God promises. We can forgive, continue to show love, and watch God work in our lives.

Gratefully, she chose to get better. I watched her perspective change and God wash the anger away. Oh how I love her! So thankful she is attentive to God!!

The following evening, we were discussing the above life lesson at dinner with the whole family, and my son half paying attention looked up from his bowl of spaghetti and said, “What? You get bitter or butter?” We laughed and explained the lesson on life again, but as I cleaned up dishes, God reminded me that really we do sometimes choose butter.

You know, the choice to not get bitter, not get better, but instead to fill our lives with something superficial to block the pain. We choose to just not deal with it. We lazily decide it’s not worth dealing with so we fill the broken emptiness with…. butter. You know, those things in life that temporarily block the pain, sweeten your taste for a fleeting moment. Maybe it’s a drink, a smoke, a snort, a pill. Maybe it’s temporary comfort in the arms of the wrong person. Maybe it’s filling your void with mindless entertainment. It could be other things too. Even good things. You might work non-stop, hunt, golf, shop, or dive head first into something with so much focus that you push the pain aside, leaving it to sit on the back shelf and rot.

The problem, is eventually that pain on the back shelf will start rot and stink. And we know when something rots, everyone around smells it too. Our sins not only hurt us, but those around us. Is there something you are dealing with that you have pushed aside and left to rot? Are you struggling with forgiveness? Do you have bitterness that has turned into resentment? Whatever life has thrown at you; I pray that you take time in prayer to let God help you. It’s not easy! I know! But it's possible with a God who gives you strength. Each day we choose; and for some of us it's a daily battle. Put on your armor and fight! Let's choose to get Better through Christ Jesus.

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.  Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:6-8

In Memory of Mrs.Vera Power

A little over a decade ago, I wandered into the Student Lounge at East Texas Baptist University for a little break. I was a newly engaged college student and my upcoming new season of life was constantly on my mind. I began to read over the bulletin board, filled with papers and announcements, when a white sheet with black lettering caught my eye.

HOUSE FOR RENT

With excitement I grabbed the sheet before anyone else had the chance to steal this deal! (You know people get married a lot at ETBU)!  Married housing was an option, but not one we were very excited about. We really wanted a dog and a yard, and they didn’t allow pets.
I showed the paper to Jeremy, discussed with him if the price would fit our very small budget, and he said let’s check it out!

I don’t know what I was expecting, but the kind, gentle voice of an elderly woman on the other end of the phone surprised me. Her name was Mrs. Vera Power and she was 86 years old.
I explained that I was an ETBU college student, newly engaged, and we were looking to secure a house for when we were married and she said she wanted to meet us.

Jeremy and I nervously went to meet Mrs. Power at her house. I’m not sure why we were nervous, but as soon as we saw her our nerves flew out the window. We instantly fell in love with her. Imagine the cutest, most beautiful grey haired woman walking up to greet you with a big smile. She was lively, witty, kind, graceful and to the point. She welcomed us with a firm handshake and a heart that beamed the light of Jesus.  I’ll never forget her United States flag rhinestone pen she wore on her shirt collar.

She was warm, friendly and almost immediately began to talk about God. She loved Jesus and while she needed renters she also loved to support the university and use her rent houses as a form of ministry.

If she only knew we would become a ministry that never left!

We rented the house for a whopping $325 a month. The Lord was so faithful because we were seriously living off of love. Not only did we receive a house for $325 a month, we received the friendship and mentor-ship of a godly lady who faithfully served her Lord. She sat down with us and talked about how a cord of two strands is easily broken, but three strands- husband, wife, and the Lord, cannot be broken. She encouraged us to never let go of our call, she praised my husband and challenged him to go after whatever God called him to do. She helped me plant flowers and gave me wisdom, love, advice, and care. She was our new precious friend.

We lived in her little rent house behind Lowes for two years before moving. But she has remained a presence in our life ever since. We have now been married eleven years and Mrs. Power is 97 years old. Around noon today she went to be with Jesus and my heart already longs to see her again one day. I wouldn’t dare selfishly keep her here on earth one extra second. She was ready to see Jesus and her late husband who she affectionately told us about. I hugged her neck about  two weeks ago, kissed her cheek, told her we loved her and how much she meant to us. She responded with love and tears, telling me how much she loved us, even asked about our children. I told her that day I would see her again, knowing the next time I saw her would be in heaven.

She was beautiful and brave! Unselfish, loving, and kind. She was an adopted grandmother you might say, and friend I will never forget. Every Christmas we received a card from her, and I received one this past December. Knowing that is the last card breaks my heart, but also fills me with joy knowing she will spend the next Christmas celebrating with her Savior.

You never know who God is going to weave into your life forever. I never would have guessed that our landlord would have become someone we loved so dearly and claimed as family. I pray to always be kind, open, and a light for Jesus like Mrs. Power, because she knew we were more than just renters, we were her ministry.

The Middle of the Night

It’s the middle of the night, but I’m not asleep.
I lie next to my husband who is now sound asleep.
One sweet little girl, dreams next to my head,
And the other two babes are tucked in their beds.

The youngest she came with a tiny bit of fear
The night can be scary when your parents aren't near.
And now she sleeps soundly and kicks with her feet,
But I savor the giggles I get to hear in her sleep.

I can hardly contain it, my heart is so full.
I lie here amazed, completely enthralled.
God gave me so much, these loved ones so near,
I feel honored, and privileged, and blessed to be here.

My cup runneth over, with the love that I feel,
Gratitude is stretching for my God to hear.
These treasures, these people, which you gave to me,
How beautiful, how perfect, how precious are Thee.

I love these dear ones, with all of my heart,
And the love that I have you first gave its start.
It’s not without you Lord, that I could love at all,
But you loved me first and gave me your all.

I walk through their rooms, and kiss their sweet heads
My prayers are raised high as I tiptoe close by.
I gently caress their sweet little backs,
And thank Jesus for providing in all that I lack.

I don’t want to leave; I want to keep watching,
Their soft little chest rise up and then falling,
But I know that God will sit by them all night
And morning will rise to awaken their light

I wander back down the cool, dark hall;
Knowing that one day they’ll all be gone.
A tear falls to my cheek, and I thank God again,
For the gift of today and the moment I’ve spent.

I crawl back into bed, with prayers of renewal,
To slow down and take time to play while their little.
I scoot near my husband and hold him real tight
So thankful and grateful for his warmth each night

I take a deep breath, and quietly pray
Our Father who Art in Heaven this day,
Thank you for lessons in the middle of the night
May we rise to shine and tell of your might.

Love at the Lake

In the eleven years that my husband and I have been married we have attended three separate marriage retreats. Not because we were on the brink of divorce, but because we believe our marriage is worth the investment. This past weekend we along with 33 other couples from our church came together and spent time learning, growing, and investing in our marriages.

Every time we leave a marriage retreat we walk away grateful, encouraged, and stronger.

I hope to encourage you today to make an effort to invest in your marriage. If you want an amazing retreat check out Weekend to Remember hosted by Family Life or ask your church if they offer marriage retreats. It does not matter your age or how many years you have been married. We can always learn something new.

When we invest and build strong marriages, we invest in the family and the church. I have three children and one of the best gifts I can offer to them is to love their Daddy.  I hope you seek out a way to invest in your marriage too. For the sake of your family, the legacy you will leave, and the kingdom of God.

God can redeem and restore the broken. God can transform and reignite your marriage if you open your hearts to Him.  If you have a spouse that will not participate pray daily that God will work a miracle in them.  I can’t imagine how difficult that would be, but I know many women who can testify that after years of prayers their spouse became open to receiving help and God worked a miracle in their marriage. I am praying that for you today.

Don't Abandon Love

It’s that time of year again when pink and red start to flood every store. Valentine’s Day candy, cards, gifts, and galore deck the shelf's with reminders to express your love to one another.

I start to think about my own husband and our early years. We met in college and one smile from across the quad could take my breath away. I thought about him often, doodled love notes in class, and dreamed of our life together. It was a fun and beautiful season of life together. I wouldn’t exchange it for anything. However, I wouldn’t want to stay in that season forever.  As you know, the longer you live together, experience life together, and grow together, centered on Christ, the deeper your love for each other grows.

2004~~(Eleven Years Later)~~2015

I do, however, see the benefits of looking back and remembering how you fell in love.  Days when life becomes hectic, crazy, stressful, and overwhelming, it’s nice to think about and be reminded. To take a few minutes to rekindle love that can often get pushed aside.

Let’s take this a little deeper.

Revelation 2:4-5 says, “But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen, repent, and do the works you did at first.”

Sometimes in our walks with Jesus we have our salvation experience where we first meet Jesus. We fall head over heels in love with him. We commit to surrender and give our whole lives over to him. We mean well, but sadly, as soon as life starts charging us, we shrink away and forget our love.

So what can you and I do to rekindle our love for the Lord? First let’s remind ourselves of what God did for us.

Galatians 4:4 says, “God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son then an heir through God.”

We were once slaves to sin and the law. We were in a yoke of slavery that led to death. But guess what! “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1

“For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love. You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth?” Galatians 5:6-7
“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Galatians 5:13-14

When I am reminded of what life was like before a Savior I am brought to my knees in gratitude. His power is made perfect in our weakness! What we could never accomplish He accomplished. He satisfied our sin debt forever. And it is with great love, honor, and joy, we have the privilege to live this life full of love for one another. Jesus died, and gave his life, on the cross. Because of that we are a new creation! Gal. 6:15! That right there rekindles my love for Jesus.  Don’t let this world lead you away from the cross.  What Jesus conquered for us let know one take away from you!!

Non-Negotiable

33 Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it. Luke 17:33 (ESV)

I love to work. I believe God designed us to work and do it to his glory. However, I am also a Mother and I have the honor and privilege to be a Mother for a very short season of life. I have decided I will "go to work" later and focus on my work as a Mother today. Being a stay at home wife and mom has become something people look down on. It has become something that sends the signal that you sit at home and do nothing. Any stay at home mom can tell you that is not true.

I have been a working mom outside of the home where I taught at a public school. I have been a full time stay at home mom with toddlers, and I have been a mom that stayed at home and worked in and out of the home as a photographer.  All have their unique advantages and dis-advantages. What is right for you? What is right for me? I believe that's between you, Christ and your husband. Only Jesus can lead you to the answer that is right for you.

Currently, in this season of life, I believe I am suppose to stay at home. There are so many things I believe God desires from me that I cannot do while working full time away from the home or in and out of the home. But to leave a job and do something new is scary. With my husbands blessing I am taking a leap of faith. I am trusting God and excited to follow him in yet another season. I don't know what that will bring, but I know obedience to God= Life. Abundant Life. And when we walk where God tells us to walk and we keep Jesus Christ as our focus we will experience his love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. Obedience to Jesus is NEVER negotiable.

Maybe you are in a different season of life than me and are struggling with another kind of decision. Just remember, Jesus is our focus and all decisions need to be in obedience to the word of God.

Praying as you seek to obey Jesus in every area of your life.

Entitlement

If you live in America, watch the news or read the paper the word “entitlement” is a common word in our society. As a parent of young children I hear a lot about kids believing they are entitled to have anything they want; a new car, cell phone, spending money, etc. The list is endless.  In fact, a whole generation is being referred to as the “Entitlement Generation”.
en-ti-tle-ment
the belief that one is inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment.

I got to thinking about myself and the human race and wondered if we sometimes struggle with entitlement when it comes to God. Do we believe that we are deserving of certain privileges?  Certain blessings? Even life itself? If we do a certain thing, God better come through? Are we a bit entitled too?

I think as believers we all agree that every breath we take is a gift from our Creator. Every moment on this earth is in his hands. We are not in control of our health or our length of days. Even Isaac in Genesis 27: 2 says, “I do not know the day of my death”.   Then, in James we are reminded of the brevity of life.

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”—  yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.  Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” James 4:13-15

I think if we are not mindful of the giver of life, humble, and grateful for every single breath we take, we risk living life as if it’s our own. We become the gods and we worship self. We do what we want to do because we think we deserve it. Life is not a privilege, it is a gift from God.

“For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.  And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for
“‘In him we live and move and have our being’;
as even some of your own poets have said,
“‘For we are indeed his offspring.’~ Acts 17:23-28 (ESV)

We are not entitled to life.

We are not guaranteed one single breath.

Each day is a gift. Every breath you take is an act of grace and love from our God.

Treasure today! Don't waste your gift. It may not be available for you to open tomorrow. We have to keep our minds focused on Jesus. He is our life. I pray that we never take for granted the gift of life. And since we do not know how long our life will last, we humbly and gratefully thank God for each day, and do our best to live for his glory and honor.

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17

Dig Deep

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Colossians 3:1-4

One of the purposes for starting this blog was to provide myself with accountability. Accountability to stay in God’s word consistently.  I love the word of God, I love studying his word, but I found myself in the busyness of life getting distracted and in need of some extra accountability.

There is nothing more important than seeking Christ. The bible says “you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you.  You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.  I will be found by you, declares the Lord…” Jeremiah 29-12-14 (ESV)

Have you ever heard someone say “Let’s dig into the word of God” or “let’s dig deeper”? I love that mental picture of digging into God’s holy word. The study of God’s word is what makes our roots grow deeper and deeper. The deeper our roots, the firmer we stand in the Lord. If we don’t toil and dig our roots remain shallow. We must be established in the word of God so that the elementary principles of the world do not sway us. We have to put on our overalls, grab our shovels, and start digging into God's word. We will sweat and our backs will ache, but oh, the reward will be so great!

“Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude. See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.” Colossians 2:6-8(ESV)

We focus too much on what’s above the ground. God desires for us to put to death what is earthly IN us. (Colossians 3:5) We have to dig. We can’t stay on top, above ground, surface level. We have to look past today and into eternity and start observing our roots. If we want our fruit to be nutritious and plentiful we have to stretch our roots. And God’s word is what makes that happen.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16 (ESV)

I want to bear fruit, but more importantly I want the private relationship between me and my Lord to be first and foremost the most important thing in my life. When that relationship is priority, and I seek to know him more and more each day, everything else in my life that I love and adore will reap the harvest of my root work. I dig deeper, and deeper, I drink, and grow. Marriage problems, Parenting problems, life problems start to fade and his word jumps off the page and into my heart. Let’s commit to abide in God’s word.

He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:8(ESV)

“That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth.” Ephesians 3:16-18 (ESV)

"But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved." Philippians 3:20-4:1(ESV)

Wanderer Come Home

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5

“But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.” 1 Timothy 6:6-10

“Some have wandered away from the faith”

Have you unintentionally “wandered away from the faith”? In today’s society it is so easy for us to wander away. There are temptations coming at us from all sides. The desire for more is at every turn. I am afraid if we are not intentional about contentment we will miss out on one of God’s greatest blessings.
If we want to experience true contentment and joy, we must evaluate our lives. We need to take a deep look at our motives and actions behind everything we do. We must consider are we living for God or for ourselves. We say we have surrendered our lives to the Lord, but do our actions reflect our words. This takes some quiet time of honest reflection.

Confession. Every day we need to recognize and confess our lack of contentment. We need to honestly apologize for our lack of contentment and ask God to gives us strength to rely on him for true joy.

1 Timothy 4:7-8 says to “discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”

Then, Paul in Philippians 4:11-13 says “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.  I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.  I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

So how do we practically “discipline” ourselves and “learn” contentment?

First and foremost, we must rely on God to give us strength. We cannot learn contentment on our own strength. In meeting with God each day we open up ourselves to hear from him. To be led and taught by a God who promises to meet with you. By keeping Christ as the center of our lives, we are laying a foundation for contentment to grow.

Second, we must identify where we are placing our trust. If we are chained to this world instead of Christ contentment we will be robbed. What are you chained too? Is it financial success, worry, entertainment, comparison, busyness, status, fear, the next big thing, the next trip, self, desire for control, keeping up with the Jones’ mentality, fear of losing worldly status, self-preservation, pride, jealousy, bitterness? What is keeping you from letting go and giving your all to Jesus?  What causes you to lose sight of eternity? What keeps you from Jesus? Ask yourself the question if I let go of pursuing these things what would I do with my time? What would Christ lead me to do?

Contentment is available to you and me right now in this very moment. It is a mindset. It is a choice to choose. Stop comparing your life to others. You be you. Be who God created you to be. Discover your gifts, talents, shape and abilities and use them for Gods glory. Don’t be someone else.

Start practicing gratitude. I once read that we should pick one object or thing in our house and thank God for it each day. For example, “Thank you God for this laundry machine. Wow! Without this machine I would have to do all this laundry by hand. Thank you for the enormous amount of time I am saving by having this machine. I realize people all over the world do not have a washing machine. Please be with the men and women who are washing their clothes by hand at this very moment. Strengthen their arms and backs as they scrub and wash. Give them comfort as they work. Help the weather be pleasant for them today as I’m certain they must hang their clothes to dry. Forgive me for being discontent with my mountain of laundry when there are people with so little.”

Wants versus Need Challenge.

I recently made a commitment to strive for the next few months and maybe even longer to not buy anything for myself that I do not need. It’s a form of fasting for me to help me refocus on all that I have. I want to LEARN true contentment. I want God to meet all my needs. I want my eyes to be open to how often I allow material possessions to meet a need rather than God.
Here are some questions I am asking myself before each purchase. Is this a need or a want? Do I already have something like this at home that will fulfill this purpose? What’s your motive for buying this today? If you don’t need it don’t buy it.

I am going to practice this for the next few months. Would you like to join me?  Let’s go to battle for contentment. I am excited to see how God is going to work through this challenge in my own life.  Let’s practice enjoying what we already have been so abundantly given. Not just material possessions, but relationships, health, nature, and more. You add to the list. What are you grateful for today.  Praying for you and me as we seek more of Him!

“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”  Ephesians 3:20-21

“But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”1 Timothy 6:11-12

“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life."1 Timothy 6:17-19

“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore, lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed.”  Hebrews 12: 11-14

It's Friday but Sunday's Coming!

I recently came across a growing form of worship called Bible Journaling or Illustrated Faith. Basically, it is artfully, doodling scripture in your bible. It was fascinating to me because I love Scripture, Art, and doodling.

Not only is it peaceful and relaxing, but it gives my hands something to do while my heart meditates and prays. I have struggled in the past with sitting still to pray and meditate on scripture. But while I color and doodle my mind seems to focus more directly on the scripture before me. I can pray and think about all Christ has done for me without getting so distracted. It's even been a blessing for my children to take part in. I found the two designs below on Pinterest by a very talented artist and added them to my own bible.
Maybe this will be helpful to you too! I pray together we will dive into God's word, "cling to his testimonies," Psalm 119:30 and "treasure his word in our hearts." Psalm 119:11.

If doodling is not your thing be creative about other ways that might help you get quiet before the Lord. Many Blessings to you and Happy Weekend. I pray you enjoy some quality time with the Lord and your loved ones.

Reminder of Love

I recently took pictures for a family, and when the photo shoot was over the little boy and Father began to play.

I was mesmerized.

You see everything about the way they interacted spurred my heart and mind on to the truth of God’s love for me.  It felt as though God was screaming to me, “Katy, do you see this!? This is me and you, this is how much I love you.”
Have you forgotten how much God loves you? Do you need a reminder today?

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of Lights, with whom is no variation or shadow of turning." James 1:17

The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. Zephaniah 3:17

I love the reminder that God REJOICES over us; over me and YOU!
He takes great delight in you.

Sometimes, like a child, I try to take steps that are too big for me. I try to climb mountains that are too high. I trip and stumble all the way up and down, but GOD IS ALWAYS THERE! Tears just fall when I think about his love. He is right there. Holding my hand, smiling, catching me, carrying me, lifting me up when I should be down.  Sometimes I cry, but he is there. Letting me rest against him, holding me tight. I'm never alone. He is always watching over me, guarding me, protecting me, teaching me, guiding me. If only I would always listen to his voice and walk in his ways.

"For I am the LORD your God, who upholds your right hand, Who says to you, 'Do not fear, I will help you.' "Isaiah 41:13

"He will not let your foot slip---- he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
 The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm,he will watch over your life." Psalm 121:3-7

'Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.'" Isaiah 41:10

"Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble.
If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes, for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught." Matthew 10:29-31

"I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
 Behold, he who keeps Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade on your right hand."
Psalm 121: 1-5

And then some days, I let go of his hand. I try to walk on my own. It's messy and ugly, but even then he never leaves my side. I am claimed and sealed until the day of redemption. I'm not ever escaping his love.  We serve a Father of Love and he loves you! If you need to know that today I can promise it. He loves you. His desire is for you! He wants a relationship with you. He wants to walk with you and be a part of your life. He wants to share and pour out his blessings on you. He loves you so much  that he sent his own son Jesus to live and die a perfect life as a sacrifice for our sins. Can you grasp his great love for you? I pray you that you can and that you love him too.

"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.  Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows." Matthew 10:29

*Special thanks to my awesome clients for letting me share their pictures.

Kindness that Leads to Repentance

I want to tell you something.
God is kind. Psalm 145:17
God is love. 1 John 4:8
God is good. Psalm 136:1
God is grace. 1 Corinthians 15:10

But please don’t misunderstand. This KIND, LOVING, GOOD, GRACE GIVING GOD, is not a pushover. His kindness, love, goodness, and grace is meant to LEAD YOU AND ME to REPENTANCE.

Please don’t pass over this life changing verse. Please don’t trample the spirit of Grace by abusing the truth of his kindness.

He his kind, but he is just.

He offers grace, but there are consequences to sin.

If you are in sin, walking in the flesh, turn from sin. Please, repent.

“For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” ~ Romans 8:2-6

Romans 2:4 The Voice (VOICE)
Do you take the kindness of God for granted? Do you see His patience and tolerance as signs that He is a pushover when it comes to sin? How could you not know that His kindness is guiding our hearts to turn away from distractions and habitual sin to walk a new path?

Romans 2:4 English Standard Version (ESV)
Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance.

Fruit of Your Mouth

A couple of days ago I read through the whole book of Proverbs and wrote out every verse concerning the mouth, tongue, speech, and lips.  You see I recently found myself in a situation where I had to eat my words and they did not taste so sweet. I was ashamed and convicted for my lack of restraint. I decided I needed a little reminder of the seriousness of my words, so to help me remember and re-focus on how God wants me to use my mouth I went to the Proverbs. This was not some form of punishment, but a practice I felt led to do and was blessed by the study.

As I read through, underlined, and wrote out each verse I was reminded what a blessing or curse our words can be. They can be a source of LIFE or DEATH. We choose every time we open our mouths.
Do I use my words for the glory of God? To encourage? To build up? Or do I use them to tear down, exalt myself, or hurt others? I have discovered in this time period with social media sites we can even share things and sin without ever opening our mouths. With a simple click of a button we can SHARE something hurtful or untrue, and in the process tear down, shred hearts, and destroy lives.. I commit to being watchful and careful. How about you?

I don’t think any more of my words are needed on this topic, just the powerful word of God. I know it's a long read, but I believe you will be blessed by reading the verses specifically about the mouth all combined together.  (Forgive me if I missed any verses)

A fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul. The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels, they go down into the inner parts of the body.” 8:13 “If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.” 18:20 “From the fruit of a man’s mouth his stomach is satisfied; he is satisfied by the yield of his lips. 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. 19:1 “Better is a poor person who walks in his integrity than one who is crooked in speech and is a fool.” 19:9 “A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish.” 20:15 “”the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.” 20:19 “Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets; therefore, do not associate with a simple babbler.” 21-8 “The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a snare of death.” 21:23 “Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.” 22:11 “He who loves purity of heart, and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend.” 22:17-18 “Incline your ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge, for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you, if all of them are ready on your lips.” 23:9 “Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the good sense of your words.” 23:16”My inmost being will exult when your lips speak what is right.” 24:26 “ whoever gives and honest answer kisses the lips” 24:28 “Be not a witness against your neighbor without cause, and do not deceive with your lips.” 25:11 “a word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.” 25:15” a soft tongue will break a bone” 16:4-5 “Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes. 26:7 “Like a lame man’s legs, which hang useless, is a proverb in the mouth of fools.” 26:9 “Like a thorn that goes up into the hand of a drunkard is a proverb in the mouth of fools.” 26:17-28 “Whoever meddles in a quarrel not his own is like one who takes a passing dog by the ears. Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, “I am only joking!” For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases.  As charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife.  The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels; they go down into the inner parts of the body.  Like the glaze covering and earthen vessel are fervent lips with an evil heart. Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips and harbors deceit in his heart; when he speaks graciously, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart; though his hatred be covered with deception, his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.  Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and a stone will come back on him who starts rolling it. A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin. 27:1-2 “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.  Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.” 29:5 “A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.” 29: 6 “a righteous man sings and rejoices” 29:9 “if a wise man has an argument with a fool, the fool only rages and laughs, and there is no quiet.” 29:11 “a fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.” 29:20 “Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” 30: 8 “Remove far from me falsehood and lying” 30:10 “Do not slander a servant to his master, lest he curse you and you be held guilty.” 31:8 “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. 31:9 “open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the right of the poor and needy.” 31:26 “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”

The Call of Wisdom

“Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the market she raises her voice; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks; “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you.”
Proverbs 1:20-23

Scoffer. A word we don’t often talk about, but one that has been on my heart the past few days.  I have been guilty of scoffing and I would guess you have been too. The word translated "scoffer" in English can mean "one who mocks, ridicules, or scorns the belief of another.” When I study the definition of scoffer I immediately think of pride. We can only mock, ridicule, and scorn when we are struggling with a measure of pride. How hurtful this can be. Not only to ourselves, but to others.
In Hebrew, the word translated "scoffer" or "mocker" can also mean "ambassador." So a scoffer is one who not only disagrees with an idea, but he also considers himself an ambassador for the opposing idea. He cannot rest until he has demonstrated the foolishness of any idea not his own. A scoffer voices his disagreement, ridicules all who stand against him, and actively recruits others to join his side. gotquestions.org
The term is not getting any prettier is it?  Can you relate?

Scoffing often occurs in my own life when I think I know more than you. When I let pride creep in and arrogance lead. It happens when I do not get my way, when things out of my control happen that I disagree with it, or when you let me down. It can also be a form of protection when I feel insecure, jealous, or convicted. It’s the result of a serious sin problem called pride.  It’s sinful and must be stopped.

We live in a society that molds us to want control, authority, and esteem. We sinfully twist that into a competitive way of life where if you are doing better than me we are tempted to scoff.  If we feel convicted or threatened or less than, we scoff. I see it every day. In me and in you.

“Be not wise in your own eyes” Proverbs 3:7
“Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate” Proverbs 8:13
"How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers" Proverbs 1:1

We must be watchful and examine our hearts.  Let us confess our sins, admit to arrogance and pride, seek forgiveness, and turn from our evil ways. When we catch our selves repeating old sinful habits, let's stop, turn, and set up guards to help us stay focused on our Savior.
Maybe that means practicing silence. Or possibly taking time to fast for a period to pray and refocus on what Jesus did for us on the cross.
Try memorizing a verse. God’s word is our sword. We need to use it by hiding his word in our heart. That’s how we fight and win battles against the flesh.

When we uproot sin from our lives, walls fall down. The heavenly Father pulls us in and his presence floods our soul. Please, won’t you seek Him today and experience his great, great love?

Perfectly Calm

I love to go to the ocean. I enjoy the sand, sun, and surf.  However, the idea of swimming in the deep parts of the ocean is very unnerving to me.  The idea of that much water beneath me, full of man-eating fish makes my toes curls.
Because of that fear I can relate to the disciples fears in Matthew 8:23-27. The scripture states, “When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him.  And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep.  And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing!”  He said to them, “Why are you afraid, you men of little faith? Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm.  The men were amazed, and said, “What kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”
While Jesus was here on earth his body was like man and he became tired and fell asleep. However, he was also perfect and without sin.  He fell asleep on the boat and a great storm arose. The disciples became afraid and cried to Jesus to save them.  And Jesus being fully God and fully man made the storm PERFECTLY CALM.
In Matthew Henry’s Commentary he says, “Those who are passing with Christ over the ocean of this world, must expect storms.” I love that. As we journey through life storms WILL come. And sometimes it may seem like our Lord is sleeping. The pulpit commentary says, “The winds and waves were mastering their souls as well as their bodies.”  But we don’t have to let that happen to us!
Psalm 121:4 says, “Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”  Our God is NEVER sleeping. He is not bound to an earthly body.  He is fully awake to all the storms raging around this world.  We in our earthly and anxious minds often doubt that truth. We see bad things happen and wonder where God is; we may not ever understand the storm, but we can trust the TRUTH.  When it is time the Lord will rebuke the winds and the sea, and it will become Perfectly Calm

There is coming a day,
When no heart aches shall come,
No more clouds in the sky,
No more tears to dim the eye,
All is peace forever more,
On that happy golden shore,
What a day, glorious day that will be.

What a day that will be,
When my Jesus I shall see,
And I look upon His face,
The One who saved me by His grace;
When He takes me by the hand,
And leads me through the Promised Land,
What a day, glorious day that will be.

There'll be no sorrow there,
No more burdens to bear,
No more sickness, no pain,
No more parting over there;
And forever I will be,
With the One who died for me,
What a day, glorious day that will be.

What a day that will be,
When my Jesus I shall see,
And I look upon His face,
The One who saved me by His grace;
When He takes me by the hand,
And leads me through the Promised Land,
What a day, glorious day that will be
